Solvent Free Synthesis of Biscoumarins by Mahesh Chand in An archive of organic and inorganic chemical sciences in Lupine Publishers

Coumarin and Coumarin-related compounds are major source of interest for many of medicinal chemist to explore its various pharmacological potentials especially bis-coumarin for their anticoagulant activity. A number of reports have appeared in the literature on the enhancement of bioactivity of bis heterocyclic compounds over simple heterocyclic compounds. Biscoumarin are very well known and possess better biological activities like anticoagulant, anti oxidant, antimicrobial activity, anti cancerous and analgesic activity than the parent nuclei. Hence, realizing the importance of biscoumarin, we thought to summarize the synthesis of bis-coumarins under solvent-free conditions in this review.

Air Quality in Welding Workshops and Its Health Implication on Welders in Port Harcourt by Chukwu Okeah GO in Archives of Organic and Inorganic Chemical Sciences in Lupine Publishers

The study was carried out in Port Harcourt to ascertain the air quality status of air in welding workshops and the health implication on welders in Port Harcourt. Five objectives alongside five research questions were set to guide in the achievement of the aim of the study. The experimental and the cross sectional research design were adopted in carrying out this study. A total of 217 welders were sampled for the study out of a total of 496 registered welders in Port Harcourt. The probability sampling technique was used in determining the sample population for the study. Descriptive statistics was used in the analysis of the data collected from the respondents. The findings of the study revealed that the air quality in the welders shop does not meet internationally accepted standards, the use of personal protective equipments is still not in its full state hence endangering lives of the welders and that large number of welders have suffered from catarrh, cough, Heart ache, waist pain skin rashes and breathing difficulty. The study recommended that health is wealth; therefore if welders must be in optimal health conditions, occupational based illness must be reduced. On the basis of this health checks for every worker must be done quarterly to verify the health status of every welder as to reduce their health risk. It also recommended that there is need for quarterly air quality assessment to be done to assess the air quality status of the welder's worksite and then identify generators/sources of pollutants, so as to reduce their occurrence.

Analysis of Risk Associated with Hospital Waste Management Practices in Public Hospitals in Port Harcourt by Chukwu Okeah GO in Archives of Organic and Inorganic Chemical Sciences in Lupine Publishers

The study set out to investigate the risk associated with hospital waste management in Port Harcourt. To achieve this, five research questions and five research objectives alongside two hypotheses were put forth to guide the study. The study adopted the use of cross sectional survey research design. A total of 90 persons were purposively sampled from three public hospitals using the stratified sampling technique to ensure all the class of persons working in the hospital was captured in the study. Questionnaire was used as the data collection instrument in the study. The results from the study revealed that waste is generated often in the sampled hospitals, Liquids, human waste and sharps are the most generated waste in the hospitals, the major waste disposal method amongst the hospitals is the use of waste contractors and that the health risk associated with hospital waste is high.

Wetland Conservation and Protection; Implications for Sustainable Flood Disaster Management in a Critical Urban Fringe Area of Port Harcourt by Chuku C in Archives of Organic and Inorganic Chemical Sciences  in Lupine Publishers

The study investigated the perception of indigenous people to wetland conservation and protection in Rumuagholu community in Obio/Akpor L.G.A of Rivers State. Experimental and survey research design were adopted in the study. Three hundred and sixty two respondents were randomly selected as the sample size for the study. Data for the study were collected using questionnaire while field measurements were obtained through satellite imagery as to ascertain the extent of wetlands in the community before and presently. Tables were used in the presentation of the result of the study. The study revealed that the people in the area do not practice wetland conservation and protection, Wetland distribution in Rumuagholu community has both spatial and temporal variation. It also revealed that wetland within the period of the study lost 10.64% its original state moving from 11km2 to 6km2 and that Loss of biodiversity in the Rumuagholu Community is a major effect of wetland loss. The study recommended the need to encourage effective urban planning mechanism that will help curtail the excessive use of wetlands, and that Government should as a matter of urgency buy up the remaining wetlands to forestall its conversion to other uses because of its role in flood management and water provision as well as eco tourism.

Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Series of 1,2,4-Triazolo[3,4-b]-1,3,4-Thiadiazole Derivatives of Anilinoacetic Acids as Promising Antioxidant Agents by Balakrishna Kalluraya in Archives of Organic and Inorganic Chemical Sciences  in Lupine Publishers

The preparation of a novel series of 6-arylaminomethyl-3-substituted-1,2,4-triazolo[3,4-b]-1,3,4-thiadiazoles (5) by the cyclocondensation of 5-substituted-4-amino-3-mercapto-1,2,4-triazoles (2) with appropriately substituted anilinoacetic acids (4) employing phosphorous oxychloride is reported. The newly synthesized compounds (5) were screened for their antioxidant activity by DPPH radical scavenging assay and their structures were elucidated on the basis of their ¹H-NMR, IR, Mass spectral and elemental analysis. Some of the tested compounds showed good DPPH radical scavenger activities comparable to that of standard BHA.
